Biotin and Beards

Being a ‘Beardsman’ and running a Beard related website, I hear and read about all sorts of things that folks use to help increase their beard’s health, growth, etc. Biotin is one such thing and I seem to be reading more and more about it.  According to our friends at Wikipedia, Biotin is “… necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. It plays a role in the citric acid cycle, which is the process by which biochemical energy is generated during aerobic respiration. Biotin not only assists in various metabolic reactions, but also helps to transfer carbon dioxide. It may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level.[3] Biotin is often recommended as a dietary supplement for strengthening hair and nails, though scientific data supporting this usage are weak.[4][5] As a consequence, biotin is found in many cosmetics and health products for the hair and skin.”  Biotin is known as vitamin H or coenzyme R,[2] is a water-soluble B-vitamin (vitamin B7).

5000mcg = 5 mg

5000mcg = 5 mg

Biotin is produced by our bodies naturally and in sufficient supply. Rare occasions will call for Biotin to be added to one’s diet, such as having your stomach removed. Ouch. So why do folks take this stuff? WebMD says

“Biotin plays a key role in the body. It supports the health of the skin, nerves, digestive tract, metabolism, and cells. Biotin may also help to treat some types of nerve pathology, such as the peripheral neuropathy that can result from kidney failure or diabetes.

Biotin supplements have been studied as a treatment for a number of conditions. In people with type 2 diabetes, early research suggests that a combination of biotin and chromium might improve blood sugar. On its own, biotin might decrease insulin resistance and nerve symptoms related to type 2 diabetes. More research needs to be done. Some preliminary evidence suggests that biotin might help strengthen brittle nails. Other uses of biotin — for conditions like cradle cap, hepatitis, hair loss, and depression — are unsupported or untested.”

WebMD tells us “Biotin occurs naturally in many foods. Wheat germ, whole-grain cereals, whole wheat bread, eggs, dairy products, nuts, Swiss chard, salmon, and chicken are all sources of biotin. The biotin in food is usually attached to protein and has relatively poor absorption.”

I started taking Biotin in July of 2012 at 1000 mcgs (1 mg), then after reading somewhere that Dr’s suggest 2.5 mgs for Hair growth, I upped my intake to 2.5 mgs or 2500 mcg. I took that for awhile and noticed that my beard was shedding less, and that my finger and toenails were growing at an incredible rate! I noticed no such increase in hair growth on my head or with my beard. I then upped the daily intake to 5000 mcg or 5 mgs.  Still, less shedding of the beard and fast nail growth.

I’ve recently purchased a product called ‘VitaBeard’ by DOVitamins.  These vitamins are heavy on the B’s and light on Biotin, only containing  .75 mg  (750 mcg). The label says this amount is 250% of our RDA, but according to the MayoClinic, because lack of biotin is rare, there is no RDA or RNI (Canada) for it. The label says 1 serving is one pill, but then the directions say to take 1 – 3 pills per day with meals. hhmm okay.

The bottle also goes on to read that if you’ve gone ‘gray’ due to stress, your natural hair color may return! Wow…after being gray for 10 years or more, this would be miraculous! lol  I will take them all and have ordered an extra bottle to be sure I can write a good review on the product for my website, The Society of Bearded Gentlemen at BeardedGents.com. I will follow this post up with a review in another month or two.

  1. Hey thanks for stopping by Fearsomebeard.
I started taking biotin three months ago. I take 3500 Mcg a day and have noticed not only an increase in hair growth & less beard shedding but an increase in body hair. I will keep taking this supplement.

I’m 18yrs but I don’t hve a beard so I’m taking 5mg biotin H-vit is it useful I. Growing of my beard facial hair

    • There is NO harm in taking Biotin, whether it helps grow hair or not. Biotin is naturally occurring in our bodies and aids is metabolizing fats. Though I doubt it will do anything for your hair/Beard. You may note your finger and toenails are growing faster then usual. 🙂

Hi iam balakrishna I need for this tablets .how to get pleease tell me in india

    • thomas says:

Did biotin help u grow a beard

      • absolutely not Thomas. Biotin naturally occurs in our bodies generally in sufficient amounts. Adding Biotin (from my experience) to your daily regimen will only strengthen your nails and make them grow faster. I’ve taken it for years and I’ve never noticed any difference in the color, texture, thickness, growth rate, or in any other way.

I have a problem, that in my face somewhere is hair somewhere is not .i am very disappointed .. Plz take me some advice .. While we do not use biotin .is really biotin is helpful for increase the hair in the face …

    • Hello K Gopi and Gagan! Sorry so late in responding. One thing to remember is that Beards take time to mature, and few men can grow a thick, full Beard right off the start. The longer you wear your Beard, you’ll see that it will fill in and thicken on it’s own; it just takes Time and Patience. As for Biotin, there is no medical proof that it helps hair grow, but it does help finger nails. I’ve been taking Biotin (10,000 MCG + 10 mg) for years now, and I cannot say I’ve seen any results from it, other than fast growing finger and toe nails. Your best bet is to take care of yourself, eat right, don’t eat too much refined sugar, and let Time do it’s thing. You will be handsomely rewarded with a nice Beard!

Hi, im 26 yrs old. Little hair on face i like to have full beard shall i take biotin? What quantity?? Suggest any?

You don’t “take” biotin. You eat it.

  5. Aqthar Hussian says:

    Hello sir
I am 24yrs old but no facial hair growth please suggest me something to get full beard

    • Well facial hair is mainly genetic. If you have some hair, the best bet is to let it grow, without trimming. When you say ‘no facial hair’ growth, do you mean there’s NO hair at all, or it’s sparse?

  6. Nijin says:

I’m nijin and 20 year old. I only have little hair on my face. how are I’m increase my face hair. is there any benefit for using biotin??? any side effect like acne for using biotin??

    • The best thing you can do is to take good care of your body! Healthy body, healthy beard :-3)}}} I’ve been taking Biotin for years now and really cannot say it has any positive effects on my Beard. My nails grow like wildfire though lol I’m not aware of any side effects of Biotin. It is made by your body in ample supply, so you’re already on biotin 🙂

  7. Nijin says:

    how old are you???

  8. Deepanshu says:

I am 18 years old and want to grow beard….I have little hair on my face…and I want to boost the growth of my facial hair…so what should I do for it…please help

  9. sourav says:

sir, I have no beard at all so plz tell me which medicine should i use and in which quantity .will Biotin help me?

    • First off, some men won’t grow facial hair at all, while some men may develop it later in life. There is no ‘medicine’ per se to make a Beard grow. Biotin ‘may’ help you, but I wouldn’t place a bet on it. How old are you sourav?

  10. sourav says:

i am 23 years old. i have not sufficient beard. will biotin heLP?

    • Beards take time to mature. The longer you let it grow and not shave it, the better it will be. You can try Biotin, but there’s no proof that it helps hair growth. It will make your finger and toenails grow very fast though. Biotin is actually produced by our own bodies in our intestines I believe so it’s natural and can’t hurt you. My suggestion would be to take a good multi vitamin and eat right. Time & Patience are our best friends when bearding.

  11. sourav says:

good multivitamin mean sir ?And what will be proper diet for this?

  12. Vitamins…make sure you eat right (healthy) avoid sugars, get exercise, and let Nature do it’s thing. It will not happen overnight sourav. It’s going to take time, so be patient and enjoy the journey!

    • vipin says:

sir,i am 18 years old but no beard me.pls help me.what medicine i will choose?

      • The best thing you can do is eat right, exercise, avoid sugars, and take a good multivitamin if you don’t get all you need from your diet. …and give it time. Not every man can grow a thick full beard at 18 yrs old.

  13. saji says:

    hai..
I got a biotin table yesterday..
I want to grow my facial hair using biotin

    • There is not guarantee that biotin will help your hair at all, but taking it will not hurt you. Our bodies make biotin in the intestines I believe, so it’s natural to our system. It will definitely make your finger and toenails grow! …and good luck with The Beard!

  14. Hills says:

i am 29 years old, all my younger siblings have grown hairs but i have absolutely non on my face. what do i do to grow it sir?

    • First, and unfortunately, not every man can grow facial hair. That being said, some men take longer to ‘sprout’ facial hair than others do. I always preach ‘Time & Patience’ when you’re trying to grow out your Beard. The best (and pretty much only) thing you can do is to take good care of yourself as in exercise, eating right, and cut down on sugars. Biotin has not been proven to ‘grow hair’ though it may help make it more healthy, it does not grow hair, but it will grow your finger nails.

  15. Ray Allen says:

Are their any side effects to taking biotin?

  16. chetan says:

Hello sir,i am 24 years old and i have grown mustaches naturally as early when i was 15 . I am eating healthy , doing exercises and everything for two years but i didnt get beard yet . I can count the no of hair on my beard

  17. Mukund says:

Hello sir my name is Mukund I don’t have facial hair I diagnosed all hormones test all is well but still I don’t have facial hair age 28 can biotin will helps in facial hair growth ,my hair is thin in scalp and hair fall also is there now I am taking biotin tell me solution please I am dis appointed

    • Not all men can grow facial hair, and though Biotin is supposed* to help hair grow, I’ve not found that to be true. It may* lessen shedding, but Biotin will mostly affect your nail growth. Beards take time too, most men can’t grow a huge Beard the first time they try. Takes years to mature and thicken. Be Patient and give Mother Nature time!

  18. renjith says:

im 18 years old still have only less beard what should i do

    • Beards take time , very few men can grow a full , thick beard the first time growing. The key is to take good care of yourself, eat right, exercise, and be patient, and give the beard time.

  19. Ed Bauler says:

I am 78. When I was 70, my testostrone was only 134 and it should be between 600-800. I had no chest hair. I take testostrone shots every week since I was 70 and take biotin 2000. During the last 6 months, I have had lots of hair on my chest and a good happy trail. My testostrone level is now 782. What caused my chest hair to start growing at the age of 78?

    • Hard to say if you’ve been taking testosterone shots and biotin for 8 years, and to suddenly sprout chest hair in the last 6 months. Testosterone plays a bigger part in body hair growth than biotin for sure. Our bodies naturally produce biotin in ample supply for our daily needs. As best I can find in my own research, there is no scientific proof biotin causes hair growth. It will make your nails grow like wildfire though,, and will help aid in digestion of certain fats (if I recall correctly- I’ve only just woken up today) lol Whatever the cause of the sudden hair growth, congratulations and more power to you 🙂

  20. AgAn says:

how many days should i take biotin of 5mg to grow full beard??? please please reply me…………

    • There is no scientific proof that Biotin grows hair. It may make the hair you have healthier, but that’s about it. You take Biotin daily as you would a vitamin; I took it for 3 years then finally stopped because I felt I was wasting my money. Remember, biotin is made by our bodies naturally, in our intestines.

  21. mr mr says:

I am 16 years old, nearly 17. I only seem to grow hair on my chin and neck and in comparison, a tiny bit of hair on my cheeks. Is this normal? If not, is there anything I can do about it? If this is normal, how long will it take to grow a full beard?

    • Most men cannot grow a full beard at that age. Many men in the 30’s can’t do that. It’s nature my friend. Beards take time to mature; they start out light, and with years (and age), they get thicker, fuller, and longer. Give it time, it will come; don’t stress over it at all! The best thing you can do is to take good care of yourself. Eat healthy foods, exercise, and cut the amount of sugar you take in. You’ll be fine! 🙂

I am going through a difficult phase. Can anyone help me? The problem is that my beard is not growing properly. I have the thin beard this is really looking awkward. My friends have dense facial hair and that makes me feel depressed. I am not feeling confident nowadays. I am just trying to avoid the female friends with the fear that they will not find me attractive. I have tried many products, but that did not help me much. I am desperately looking for some help. Have you gone through this phase at some point in your life? If anyone has the same problem then please share with me and help me to come out of the situation. I am looking for your help.

    • Garry, apologies for such a late response. You can’t really hurry a Beard’s growth. It’s mostly genetics, but taking good care of yourself helps a lot. Eating right, getting enough exercise, etc will all help play a role in your Beard’s growth and overall health.

  25. andyjnr says:

I have been using rogain and it helped me from beardless to beard and combination of biotin helped me to grow fuller beard but be patient it takes times.

    • lol Biotin may* work for some folks, but I still believe it’s a myth in respect with hair growth. I’ve been using Biotin @ 10,000 mcg since 2013, and there is NO change in my beard length, texture, nor fuller. Now since I’ve been using Biotin, I can attest to the fact that it makes my finger and toe nails grow very fast. It also plays a part in digestion. My beard is 9 years old and has for the most part, never been trimmed. It is about one foot in length, using competition method of measurement. I also know the company that makes Rogaine discourages use on the face. If it works for you that’s great. Beards are mostly* genetics, and take time to mature; ie, thicken, lengthen, and fill in.
