I was asked a few weeks back if I’d be a judge at an upcoming competition for the group Beards for Autism. I am honored to have been asked and had to say yes to such a worthy cause, a worthy cause with Beards! The event was held Saturday, April 26th, 2014 in Orlando, Florida at Divine Torture Tattoo on Curry Ford Road. I’d been chatting with Harley Stringer for awhile now and this was going to be the first time I’d met him and his lovely wife Felicia, in person.
The folks at Divine Torture Tattoo were super friendly, nice, and did a great job handling this affair. Nick Ponticelli, the body piercer there is also a photographer, so he manned the Nikon to document the event. The owners of the shop, Aaron and Judy, were most gracious and kind, and Judy is the business! lol She does event planning and does a fine job at that! There was food for us and drink and lots of camaraderie too.
It was a small competition, and all great folks! It was very difficult to judge because all of The Beards that entered were great and of course I wished there’d been awards for the top 7 instead of top 3. I was not alone in judging, and had another judge, Javier who did a great job. In comparing scores, we’d given about the same scores for the same members; funny. We worked out number one, then had conference on who should be #2 and #3. So difficult to do, as the competition was good and Javier and myself were new to being judges.
Every time I am with a group of beardies, I have to say, they are (we are) the most friendly of folks! This research out saying bearded men have an aggressive look is preposterous! All in all this was a great event and I am very happy to have met Harley and Felicia, Judy and Aaron, and Mr Nick! Great folks indeed!!
